How our bowels function varies greatly not only from individual to individual, but also for the same individual in different moments.
This may be affected by diet, stress, medicine, illnesses and even social and cultural standards.

The best way to treat and prevent constipation is by combining physical activity, fibre-rich diet and proper supplements.

Sene (Cassia angustifolia), is indicated for treatment of constipation in a smooth or purgative way, stimulating the peristalsis of the large intestine.
Sene's proprieties include: laxative, purgative, carminative (to combat flatulence), antacid, purifies and anthelmintic actions.

Plums (Prunus domestica) is rich in copper and boron and has inulin, a nutrient composed of fructose.
Inulin is a soluble dietary fibre that is not digested by the stomach, reaching the intestine unchanged, where it acts as a prebiotic food, i.e., feeds the intestinal bacteria and creates an acidic environment, which, in turn, facilitates calcium absorption..

Advantages of pro-biotics:

It also contains sorbitol, a substance that helps the body absorb more water, which, together with fibres, will accelerate bowel movements.

Cascara Buckthorn or Rhamnus purshiana, plant rich in hydroxyanthracene derivates, which grant it a laxative action, positively impacting constipation.
This plant makes bowel movements easier and quicker, stimulating the nervous endings on the intestinal wall, thus avoiding excessive water absorption and dehydration of faeces. It is mainly recommended for general or chronic constipation, flatulence and acts as a laxative.

Artichokes help protect the liver and the gallstone bladder, stimulating liver cells regeneration and helping eliminate toxins accumulated in the hepatic system.
It also increases bile secretion, thereby aiding the digestion of fats in cases of liver malfunction and lazy gallbladder and contributing to the smooth functioning of the intestine.

Aloe also contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C and E, folic acid and niacin, plus the most important minerals such as calcium, sodium, iron, potassium, chromium, magnesium, manganese, copper, and zinc.
Aloe is rich in aloin, which in small amounts acts as a digestive tonic, thus facilitating difficult digestions since it stimulates the flow of the gallbladder into the intestine.
In average doses, it plays a laxative action, stimulating secretions in the bowel mucosa, increasing intestinal peristalsis and inhibiting the reabsorption of water into the intestines, making stools softer and easier to pass.
For this reason, it is often used for constipation, anal fissures and haemorrhoids.

Caraway stimulates digestion and contributes to normal bowel function.
It limits digestive discomfort, such as flatulence.
Caraway's relaxing and warming action over the intestine makes it a great ally for digestives ailments, such as sickness, indigestion, gas and bloating.

Research has shown that kiwifruit significantly improves bowel movements in healthy elderly and chronically constipated adults. (Rush EC, et al, 2003).
Inuline is a probiotic food, since it passes through the stomach and small intestine without being digested.
Since there is any calorie intake and being fermented by Bifidus bacterium and Lactobacillus bacteria, they help increase that microflora, which is related to improved colon health and influence a general sense of well-being.
Apart from that, it affect the physiological parameters of the digestive tract, such as gastric emptying, transit time, faecal pH and weight, quite like dietary fibres.

There are several harmless microorganisms that live in our bowels, which are extremely useful and indispensable for maintaining a good physiological functioning and good condition of the body's health.
The World Health Organisation defines probiotics as "live micro-organisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host" (FAO/WHO, 2001).
They play an important role because:

Nutritional supplementation with lactobacilli acts as a smart and intelligent treatment in the prevention and fight against several diseases, without the risk of harming or poisoning the body.

Magnesium oxide (magnesium)
Magnesium plays a key role both in the immune system and in the muscle contraction of the intestine.
