One in four people in the world suffers, has suffered or will suffer from depression.
One in five patients of Portuguese primary healthcare units is depressed at the time of consultation.
Some symptoms, including sadness, pessimism, low self-esteem, which appear frequently, may be all present at once.
It is important to understand that, apart from prolonged sadness and lack of interest, depressed individuals often lack will to or take pleasure from activities that they used to consider pleasant and feels without energy and persistently tired.

As a rule of thumb, depression is associated with low serotonin levels.
Tryptophan (present in Griffonia), magnesium and vitamin B6 are essential nutrients for synthesising serotonin.

The medicinal properties of Griffonia simplicifolia seeds were discovered in the 1960s, when 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) and other plant substances were isolated.
5-HTP is a chemical product that the body produces from tryptophan (an essential amino acid, obtained through food). Afterwards, tryptophan is converted into 5-HTP and transformed into another chemical substance called serotonin, a neurotransmitter.
Griphonia’s 5-HTP is directly converted into serotonin and enters much more easily into our central nervous system.
Serotonin helps to regulate mood and behaviour, having a positive effect on sleep, humour, anxiety, appetite and pain sensation.

Passionflower or Passiflora incarnata L., contains flavonoids and alkaloids that have calming properties, solving anxiety problems, nervousness, stress, anxiety and insomnia, restoring the person's emotional control.
Unlike classical hypnotics, it is not addictive.
This medicinal plant has a relaxing and anti-depressant, analgesic, hypotensive and sedative action.

For centuries the roots of Rhodiola have been used by Eastern European and Asian cultures to improve physical endurance, reduce recovery time after intense exercise and work performance, longevity, resistance to diseases caused by high latitudes, and to treat fatigue, depression, anaemia, impotence, gastrointestinal malaise, infections and disorders of the nervous system (Richard, 2002).
Since it is adaptogenic, it helps the body resist/adapt to physical, chemical or emotional stress without disturbing the body's normal functions.
It regulates heart rate and improves memory.
Also very popular for its antidepressant, anxiolytic and immunostimulatory effects.
Rhodiola extracts seem to protect cells from external damage and to interfere with the production of neurotransmitters and ATP (energy).

The red berries of midland hawthorns (Crataegus sp) have been long used for their diuretic and astringent applications. Recently, North-American doctors highlighted its powerful cardiac action.
The flavonoids present regulate heart rate: it acts on cardiac rhythms that are too fast and reduce heart palpitations (exaggerated perception of heartbeats) in anxious individuals.
Some studies observed the reduction of atherosclerosis plaques, due to anti-lipid and antioxidant activity, thus contributing for the blockage of free radicals that lead to atherosclerosis.
Crataegus sp is a cardiac tonic, that protects the heart.
Germany's E Committee has approved Crataegus sp to be used in cases of class I or II heart failure, angina pectoris and benign arrhythmias.

VITAMIN B6 (pyridoxine)
Vitamin B6 contributes to the normal energy-producing metabolism and helps the normal function of the nervous system (serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline).
Vitamin B6 plays a role in the normal functioning of the immune system ad contributes towards the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
A deficiency of this vitamin may cause alterations in the central nervous system, leading to the appearance of symptoms such as irritability, depression and disorientation.
Vitamin B6 is essential for Magnesium absorption.

Magnesium carries out several functions:

Studies have shown that low Magnesium levels decrease serotonin levels (neurotransmitter linked to mood disorders).

Vitamin B3 may contribute towards the revitalisation of skin, for the good function of the digestive tract, being quite necessary for the maintenance of the nervous system, aiding in the formation of neurotransmitter, relieving anxiety and insomnia.
It stimulates circulation and reduces high blood pressure.

Fish oil reduces the risk of heart complications, improves the skin, reduces the symptoms of osteoarthritis, inhibits signs of premature ageing, prevents depression, preserves muscle tone and muscle mass, helps burn fat efficiently and improves memory.
In the treatment of depression, Omega 3 supplementation is recommended, since it improves emotion and mood control, thus decreasing the symptoms of depression, such as anxiety, sleep disturbances and sexual dysfunctions.
